ASD support-level guide
Social communication: Noticeable deficits without supports; difficulty initiating social interactions or atypical/unsuccessful responses; reduced social interest may be evident.
Restricted / repetitive behaviors: Inflexibility or restricted/repetitive behavior causes significant interference in one or more contexts; difficulty switching activities; organization/planning problems can hamper independence.
Social communication: Marked deficits in verbal and nonverbal social communication; impairments apparent even with supports; limited initiation and reduced or abnormal responses.
Restricted / repetitive behaviors: Inflexibility, difficulty coping with change, or restricted/repetitive behavior is obvious to observers and interferes with functioning across contexts; distress/difficulty changing focus or action.
Social communication: Severe deficits in verbal and nonverbal social communication causing severe impairment; very limited initiation and minimal response to social overtures.
Restricted / repetitive behaviors: Extreme difficulty coping with change or other restricted/repetitive behavior markedly interferes with functioning in all spheres; great distress/difficulty changing focus or action.
No Level 4: DSM-5-TR ASD severity/support specifiers stop at Level 3.
